Folklore Favorites

For as long as I can remember, Taylor Swift has been my favorite musician. When she announced that she would be releasing a surprise album this summer, I was over the moon. Normally, Taylor spends months dropping hints and then promoting her new albums, which is why this surprise was even more mind blowing.

What I love most about the new Folklore album is how carefully and meticulously the storyline of each song was planned. Taylor’s concept of “folklore” gracefully allows each song to flow together in a way that lets each song intertwine with recognizable details and characters. The characters Betty and James seem to suspiciously reappear in and out of Taylor’s lyrics on the album, allowing the listener to hear multiple perspectives of this seemingly forbidden love. Evidentially, in the song called Betty, James is apologizing for treating Betty poorly, while the song August tells the story from Betty’s heart broken perspective. Another character on the album is Rebecca, mentioned in the song, The Last Great American Dynasty. Rebecca is vividly described as a widowed woman who took Newport, Rhode Island by storm after the suspiciously described death of her rich husband. At the end of the song, we surprisingly learn that Taylor is the next owner of Rebecca’s Newport Mansion. Together, these stories and characters create a sonically cohesive body of folklore tales that even the biggest Taylor Swift critic would have a hard time disliking.

  2. I am also a fan of Taylor Swift and loved both her albums "folklore" and "evermore". Your comment on her "folklore" album is beautifully written and reflects your appreciation of her music. Your word choice does Taylor's poetic lyrics justice in describing the tone and style of her work. Great post!
